Malta Boosted By Coronation Street
British soap fans are likely to flock to the Mediterranean island of Malta thanks to a new Coronation Street storyline being filmed on the island.
Tourism on the island had dropped over the last year, but increased availability of low-cost flights and growing coverage of the island's delights in the UK media is to be further boosted by the appearance of stars of the world's longest running soap.
When discussions about filming on the island began earlier this year, UK-based site YourMalta.com commented:
"If it were to happen, it could be a major boost for the winter season and for summer 2008 too.
"A half hour episode on Malta will reach more people over a longer period of time than a tourist authority could hope to with a series of twenty or thirty second advertisements, it would be worth millions in equivalent advertising."
The talks were indeed successful, and the upcoming storyline, featuring Eileen Grimshaw (Sue Cleaver), Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) and Robin Askwith, star of the 1970s Confessions Of…movies, is certain to draw increased tourism to the beautiful island.
