Minister expects 'bumper year' for film industry

Investments Minister Austin Gatt yesterday described 2007 as a "bumper year" of small and medium projects in the film industry in accordance with the government's established targets.

Dr Gatt was speaking at the launch of the Malta Film Commission's new official website, an important tool to attract investment in Malta's movie industry.

The government invests Lm90,000 in publicity for this sector a year, Dr Gatt said, adding that 2007 started on a good note with the shooting of the Anglo-German-Hungarian production Eichmann.

A Polish TV series, Kryminalni, a story based in Malta, is being shot here, while other projects lined up for 2007 include a Turkish production in March and a BBC documentary, being filmed over three weeks, using different parts of Malta and Gozo to feature the siege of Toulon.

Following a study by international experts to advise on the directions to be taken in the industry, a wide consultation process is expected to start with existing and potential players to lead to the draft of a strategic plan for the next 10 years, Dr Gatt said.
